THE SIXTH CONTINENT: Defending the uniqueness of the duty free environment vis-à-vis regulatory developments

According to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, more than 1.1 billion people traveled internationally in 2014. And by 2020 it is forecasted that this number will reach over 1.4 billion. These international travelers, during certain moments of their trip, become inhabitants of what resembles a new continent of the world: the travel retail and duty free environment. This sixth continent has a distinctive geography, economy, flows, demographics and consumers’ behaviors. But the dynamics of this very particular ecosystem can be easily disrupted by local governments seeking to regulate duty free as an extension of the domestic markets. Representing one of the most important retail categories in this sixth continent, tobacco manufacturer Japan Tobacco International – JTI- will explain how the category advocates for the uniqueness of our channel and for the protection of the retailers’ international competitiveness against unfitted local regulation.
